Frizzy Grey Hair
Why the Texture Changes and How REWIND Helps

The thing my grey grow-out clients hate is almost never the color. It is the frizz. Hair that was smooth and predictable for forty years grows in wiry, dry, and impossible to tame, and the silver that looks so good on someone else looks fuzzy on you. Most women love their grey and just not its texture. Here is why grey hair frizzes, what actually helps, and the collagen treatment we have made a staple for grown-out and transitioning clients at Got Hair? Color Salon in San Antonio.

Why Grey Hair Frizzes

When a follicle stops producing pigment, it changes in other ways too. The strand it grows is usually drier, because the oil glands around it slow down. The cuticle, the overlapping outer layer that keeps hair smooth, tends to be rougher and more irregular. And many women find their grey grows in with a different wave or kink than their pigmented hair had, so it does not lie the way the rest of the hair does.

Put those together and you get strands that are dry, rough-surfaced, and going their own direction. That is frizz. In San Antonio's humidity it is worse, because rough cuticles absorb moisture from the air and swell. In our hard water it is worse again, because mineral deposits build up on the strand and make the surface rougher still. And because grey has no pigment, every bit of that roughness scatters light, so the hair looks dull on top of looking frizzy.

What Does Not Work

Heavy oils and silicones. They flatten the frizz for an hour and then build up, weigh grey down, and leave it looking greasy and yellow. Flat-ironing it into submission at high heat. White hair scorches to yellow faster than pigmented hair, and the heat dries it out further, which makes tomorrow's frizz worse. And going back to color just for the texture. Permanent color can make grey feel smoother temporarily because it deposits into the cuticle, but it restarts the whole coloring cycle you worked to leave.

The REWIND Treatment

The treatment we reach for first is REWIND. It is an in-salon treatment that adds collagen back into the hair, which plumps and smooths the strand and reduces frizz without flattening your volume or changing your natural wave. It also contains an anti-yellowing ingredient, which matters for grey more than for any other hair, because the same conditions that cause frizz cause yellowing.

The results last about ten washes, and it is safe to repeat once a month, so most clients pair it with a gloss or a trim on a regular schedule. There is no chemical change to the hair, no relaxing, and no downtime. You leave with hair that feels like it did before it went grey and looks brighter because the surface is smooth enough to reflect light again.

We recommend it for three groups: women who are fully grown out and want to keep their natural grey but not its texture, women in the transition phase whose new growth is fighting with their old lengths, and anyone whose grey has gone dull and yellow and wants both fixed at once.

When a Brazilian Blowout Is the Better Choice

For coarser, thicker grey, or for women who want three months of humidity-proof smoothness rather than one, a Brazilian Blowout is the step up. It seals the cuticle with a keratin coating that blocks humidity for ten to fourteen weeks and works well on grey and mature hair. It does not relax your wave unless you want it to. We will steer you to one or the other at your consultation based on how coarse the grey is and how much maintenance you want.

Home Care That Helps

  • Moisture over oil. A hydrating, sulfate-free shampoo and a real conditioner every wash. Grey needs water in the strand, not a coating on top of it.
  • A chelating wash every week or two. This removes the mineral buildup from our water that roughens the surface. A violet-toned chelating shampoo like K18 Triple Bright does that and handles yellowing at the same time, used the way we describe in our post on why grey turns yellow.
  • Heat protectant and lower heat. Always protect, and keep tools under 350 degrees. Let curls cool before you touch them.
  • A leave-in with UV protection in summer. Sun dries and yellows grey faster than anything else here.
  • Trims. The oldest, driest ends frizz most. Regular trims remove them before they split.

If you love your grey and hate the frizz, you do not have to choose. Book a consultation and we will look at your texture, your water, and your routine, and tell you whether REWIND, a smoothing treatment, or a change in home care is the fix. Our grey blending specialists work with natural grey every day, and texture is as much a part of that as tone. Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my grey hair so frizzy?

Follicles that stop producing pigment usually also produce less oil and a rougher, more irregular cuticle, and the grey often grows in with a different wave than the rest of your hair. Dry, rough-surfaced strands going their own direction is frizz, and San Antonio's humidity and hard water make it worse.

What is the REWIND treatment for grey hair?

REWIND is an in-salon treatment that adds collagen back into the hair to smooth the strand and reduce frizz without flattening volume or changing your wave. It also contains an anti-yellowing ingredient. Results last about ten washes and it is safe to repeat once a month.

Is a Brazilian Blowout good for grey hair?

Yes, especially for coarser or thicker grey or when you want ten to fourteen weeks of humidity-proof smoothness. It seals the cuticle with a keratin coating and does not relax your natural wave unless you want it to. We recommend REWIND or a Brazilian Blowout based on how coarse the grey is and how much maintenance you want.
