A Damage Recovery Plan Using K18

Hair that has been bleached, colored over and over, or flat-ironed every morning often gets to a point where nothing seems to help. It tangles, it snaps, and it will not hold a style or a color. We call the fix hair rehab, because it works like the real thing: it takes consistency, it takes honesty about what caused the problem, and there are no shortcuts. Here is the plan we would walk you through.

First, the Honest Part

Hair is not living tissue once it leaves the scalp, so it cannot heal itself. Good products can improve its strength, feel, and appearance, sometimes dramatically. But hair that is badly broken still needs to be trimmed away over time. The goal of rehab is to protect what can be saved and grow out healthier hair behind it.

How Damaged Is Your Hair?

  • Mild: dry ends, some frizz, color that fades quickly.
  • Moderate: rough texture, tangling, split ends, and hair that takes forever to dry.
  • Severe: a gummy or stretchy feel when wet, and pieces that snap off easily.

Severe damage needs professional eyes before anything else goes on it, especially more color or lightener.

Where K18 Fits In

Lightener, color, and heat can break the bonds that give hair its strength. K18 is designed to target that kind of broken-bond damage, rather than just coating the hair to make it feel smoother. That is why we incorporate bond-building treatments like K18 into every lightening service here at Got Hair?

The at-home leave-in mask works differently from a regular conditioner, and how you apply it matters:

  • Shampoo first, and skip conditioner.
  • Towel-dry your hair well.
  • Work a small amount through the damaged lengths.
  • Wait four minutes and do not rinse.
  • Style as usual.

Follow the directions on your package for how often to use it, and ask us if your hair needs something different. Too much product just weighs it down. You can find it in our shop.

A Simple Rehab Plan

Weeks 1 to 4: stop the damage. Pause lightener and any unnecessary chemical services. Cut back on hot tools, and when you do use them, apply protectant first and keep the heat down. Start your treatment routine as directed.

Weeks 5 to 8: rebuild your routine. Keep up with treatments, and add a gentle sulfate-free shampoo and a conditioner that suit your hair. Be careful when detangling, and sleep with your hair loose or in a soft tie.

Week 8 and beyond: trim and reassess. Take off what has already split, so it does not travel further up. Then we can look at the condition of your hair and decide whether it is ready for color again, and what kind.

Your hair may need more or less time than this. It depends on where you are starting from.

What Slows Recovery Down

  • Color at home between visits. Layering box dye over damaged hair can make things unpredictable, and can make any color correction harder later.
  • Hot tools on damp hair. Dry your hair fully before you touch it with an iron.
  • Stacking heavy products. Hair that is coated can feel better for a day, but it can also go limp and dull.
  • Skipping trims to keep length. Holding on to fried ends can leave your hair looking thinner overall.

Can You Color Damaged Hair?

Sometimes, and it depends on the damage. A gentle gloss may be fine when more lightener would be a mistake. We will tell you honestly what your hair can handle, and if the answer is to wait, we will say so. Our post on fixing hair color without damage explains how we approach it.

How do you use the K18 leave-in mask?

How long does it take to recover damaged hair?

It depends on the starting point and how consistent you are. Many plans run for at least two months, with trims and a reassessment along the way, and severe damage may take longer.
